“Matching books to readers provides opportunities to process texts that are not too difficult or too easy, allowing the reader to learn from the text.”

Boy Reading Puppy Danny Lap BookThe MRB Guided Reading Sets are compiled using the guidelines of the F&P Text Level Gradient™. The increasing levels of the books in the sets support the development of self-initiated actions a student uses to solve a range of texts. With daily instruction and guidance from the teacher, young readers are able to progress through levels of increasingly difficult texts with success.

In 1996, Irene Fountas and Gay Su Pinnell revolutionized early literacy education by applying their A-through-Z leveling system to small-group guided reading. That leveling system, known as the F&P Text Level Gradient™, is the most recognized tool for selecting books for small-group reading instruction.

Guided reading is focused on reading. It’s not about phonics. In Guided Reading, the teacher uses information gathered from individual or group assessments to group students together for reading instruction. A small group of students with similar strengths and needs read the text independently, with the support of a teacher.

Selecting a book with the correct balance between support and challenge for each student is key to successful reading.
