At the Zoo Set 2 by MaryRuth Books is a set of four books about exotic, wild animals that live at the zoo. Children will be captivated by these stories of their favorite zoo animals with bright, original photography. Titles in this set include Rhinoceroses at the Zoo, Flamingos at the Zoo, Penguins at the Zoo, and Polar Bears at the Zoo. Each book features a glossary that includes newly introduced, subject-specific words. Books may also be purchased as individual titles.

The titles in At the Zoo Set 2 range in guided reading levels from E to H and are appropriate for emergent to early fluent readers. Developmental Reading Assessment (DRA) ranges from 6-14 for the set. For more specific information on levels, please see the main product page for each of the four titles in the set. Click here for a printable label sheet of Fountas & Pinnell and Reading Intervention levels for the books in the At The Zoo Collection.

Reading nonfiction/informational books, like the At the Zoo Sets, provides a different type of literacy benefit to early readers. Reading nonfiction helps young students develop background knowledge, which increases their comprehension ability by enabling them to make sense of new ideas. Additionally, informational texts have the potential to motivate students to read more by tapping into their personal interests. Encouraging students to explore a broad array of informational texts can help them see that the real world is as interesting and amazing as any fictional one. MaryRuth Books offers many fiction and nonfiction/informational leveled readers, suggested and used by Reading Recovery® and Guided Reading educators, when teaching Upper Emergent readers.

The titles in At the Zoo Set 2 are included with At the Zoo Set 1,  At the Zoo Set 3, and At the Zoo Set 4 in the At the Zoo Collection (single copy of each of 16 titles) and the At the Zoo Classroom Collection (6-pk of each of 16 titles).

“Flamingos at the Zoo” pretty much sums up everything that I am looking for to support my instruction: colorful, inviting cover, rich pictures, appropriate text features, and length. I think the nonfiction/informational sets would really fill my instructional holes.
