Description

In the In the Woods with Danny and Bee SetDanny and Bee explore the same area of the local woods during spring, summer, autumn, and winter. During their walks, they observe the seasonal changes the plants and animals make. The set is an easy way to gently introduce young readers to the sciences that study the natural world and the relationships between organisms and their environments. Each book features original photography, has a glossary of new terms, and instructions for young explorers on how to make a paperbag field journal to take with them when they do their own exploring.

Coordinating Activity

  • An equinox occurs when the sun is exactly over the equator. When this happens, the hours of daylight and the hours of darkness are almost equal. There are two equinoxes every year. Autumn begins with the September Equinox.

Reading informational books, like the In the Woods with Danny and Bee Set, provides a different type of literacy benefit to early readers. Reading nonfiction helps young students develop background knowledge, which increases their comprehension ability by enabling them to make sense of new ideas. Additionally, informational texts have the potential to motivate students to read more by tapping into their personal interests. Encouraging students to explore a broad array of informational texts can help them see that the real world is as interesting and amazing as any fictional one. MaryRuth Books offers many fiction and nonfiction/informational leveled readers, suggested and used by Reading Recovery® and Guided Reading educators, when teaching Upper Emergent readers.

I am beginning my third year of teaching first grade in South Washington County. The students LOVE Danny! We have so much success in using these because the students have fun discussing them. I integrate science and math into my literacy as much as possible, so any book with topics related to these subjects is helpful. The look of the Danny books are great! The font is the perfect size, the photos are fun, and the titles are clear. Thank you for these excellent resources!
